How to switch your skincare products

Hi all, it has really been a while and I apologize for the lack of updates in this small space of mine. Life just catches up with us and we have other priorities that we need to attend to. I would certainly continue to update this humble blog of mine and would appreciate your patience with this.

Today I would like to share my personal experience on switching skincare products. Some people out there are not as lucky as others who have zero issues switching their skincare products just like that. Unfortunately for me, I fall into the 'unlucky' category whereby issues will always surface whenever I switch skincare. So you would say 'Why switch then?'. Well, there could be reasons..... Because we heard good feedbacks from our friends, we were fascinated by the advertisements on TV and the list goes on..... So how do we do it then?

1) Know yourself (and your skin)
Nothing beats knowing yourself and your skin, especially ingredients that you have reacted adversely towards to previously. Skin does change over time and especially as we age. My skin now reacts differently to products as compared to 10 years ago and products that I have tried previously that gave me severe breakouts instead worked wonders for me now. However, as a precaution, you can always start with a patch test first.

2) Plan ahead
My skin can be sensitive at times so I always plan ahead when I have the intention to switch products. You might ask "Ruby, what do you mean by planning ahead?'. My suggestion is always to start baby steps in switching over to new products while you are still on the existing skincare regime and products. I always start trying out new products while I still has 1/4 of the existing products. A suggestion could be this:-

Week 1 (Trying new products only on alternate evenings)
- Morning: Existing products
- Evening: New products (alternate evenings only)

Week 2 (Trying new products every evening)
- Morning: Existing products
- Evening: New products

Week 3 (Using new products alternate mornings, and every evenings)

Week 4 (You can fully switch over to new products)

For ladies who have extremely sensitive skin, you have to start gradual and be patient. My sister who has extremely sensitive skin, tried this method and thank goodness was able to switch over to new skincare regime and products.

3) It's normal to have breakouts?
I used to stop continuing with the new products the moment I see pimples popping out within the first few days. I started to recognise that this is the way my skin goes through the detoxification process. This is no difference from you feeling lethargic when you start on a juice cleanse or detox program. However, should the breakouts be extremely red and fierce after 1 - 2 weeks, the new products might not be for you.

4) Be patient
I usually do not switch over an entire new skincare regime just like that. My personal preference is to switch product by product. This is also because my products do not all run out at the same time. By switching over product by product, it will also be easier for you to identify which products work or not work for you.

5) Drink more water
Healthy skin always start with proper lifestyle. Drinking sufficient water help the body to flush out toxins and keep our skin hydrated.

The above pointers are tried by me personally and I certain hope that it can help other individuals. However, do note that results will varies from individual and ultimately you know yourself best. :)

I have been a fan of cleansing oil for the longest time because I felt cleansing oil cleanses most thoroughly and makes me feel more confident that all traces of makeup and dirt that I have on my face is properly removed. After following up with my usual cleanser, my skin felt clean and smooth without the tightness of over cleansing. Love it!!

So one day I was chatting with a friend and she told me she had this problem of breakouts lately as well and she has been using Clarins products which is very effectively for her. I'm sold, I'm so trying it!

The 2 products that she recommended are:-
1) Clarins Toning Lotion with Iris
2) Lotus Face Treatment Oil

Both products are targeted at oily, combination skin which purifies and tightens pores. Method is usage is extremely easy as well.

1) Drip 2 drops of Lotus face Treatment Oil on palm

2) Pour Clarins Toning Lotion with Iris onto palm (I usually pour in approximately 20cent coin size of toning lotion)

3) Rub this 'mixture' gently in your palm to warm it up and apply over the face.

These 3 steps are to be done after cleansing. After applying the toning lotion and treatment oil, you are done. No need for moisturiser or what not, except for localised pimple treatment cream / gel or eye cream. Super simple!

If you are a fan of Clarins and is using Clarins Truly Matte Pure & Radiant mask with pink clay, these 3 steps that I just mentioned can be performed after cleansing and before applying the clay mask. After washing off the clay mask, repeat these 3 steps again. You skin will feel very clean and refreshed without the feel of tightness.

I have been using the applicattion of Clarins Toning Lotion mixed with Lotus Treatment Oil every night for a week and my breakouts has subsided substantially. You may give this a try if you have breakouts as well. Results may vary. Good luck!

Review: Bionike Defence B-Lucent Day Peel and Roll-On Focus

I have been generously invited to the BioNike Defence B-Lucent event in the earlier part of the year and the company has provided Defence B-Lucent Day Peel and Roll-On Focus for our use and review. After using it for a few months, I am finally ready to write this review. :)

BioNike Defence B-Lucent Day Peel

Day Peel is a daily creamy, rinse-off cleanser that removes purity through the gentle exfoliation. The exfoliating grains are really fine and does not provide irritation to my combination sensitive skin. The special formulation is based on polyhydroxy acids, effective in modulating the keratinisation process, favouring cell turnover and providing hydration at the same time.

This cleanser is also fragrance-free and thus is extremely suitable for sensitive skin.

After rinsing, my face feels fresher and also slightly fairer due to the exfoliating effect.

BioNike Defence B-Lucent Roll-On Focus

Roll-On Focus is a localised treatment targetted at lightening dark spots. The special ingredients included achieve a double effect: provide an immediate exfoliating action (alpha and polyhydroxy acids) and, at the same time, attenuate melanin production.

It comes with a roller tip that makes application very easy.

The product is a clear serum that has a faint berry scent, very refreshing!

I have tried Roll-On Focus on my freckle for about 3 months and although the effect is slow, I do see mild lightening on my freckle. It also does not irritate my sensitive skin which is good news. Do take note that it is also important to couple any spot lightening treatment with adequate sunblock so that while treating the pigmentation, you do not further enhance the development of spots. :)

The 3 products that I will be reviewing here will be:-

Deep Exfoliating Gel (retailing at $32.90)

It comes in a easy squeeze plastic tube which is very user friendly. After applying and massaging the clear gel on dry skin, you can start to see bits of dead skin forming. I love how my skin feels smoother and cleaner after using the product. :)

Radiant Youth Essence (retailing at $38.90)

For ladies with dry skin, you would really like to pay attention to this product. Radiant Youth Essence is your saviour when you need that immediate moisture to combat your dry skin. Housed in a plastic bottle with pump applicator, it is very easy to pump out the essence for application. The essence is clear, watery and very moisturising. However, I do not think it is suitable for ladies with oily skin as it is has a tinge of oiliness in it that you might not feel that the product has been properly absorbed. However, I have tried it on my neck and love how smooth my neck felt after application.

Face Lifting Cream (retailing at $49.90)

The light cream is easily absorbable after light massaging into the skin and I do not have any sticky after feel. I do notice that my skin looks more shiny after application and would suggest ladies with combination or oily skin to go easy with the amount first.

After using Face Lifting Cream for about 3 weeks, I noticed that the laugh lines at my cheeks does seem to be less obvious. As I do not have any wrinkle issues, I cannot comment on this function.

Review: Mentholatum Deep Moist

For one reason or another, I have always been plagued with chapped lips and I can't seem to find a lip balm that I am happy with the texture of taste. When I was sponsored with Mentholatum Deep Moist for review, I immediately say yes and hope it would be something I like. :)

Mentholatum Deep Moist is enriched with the following ingredients:-

1) Hyaluronic acid (premium ingredient that forms a smooth, moisture locking shield for softer, smoother lips.  It can hold 1000X its weight in water, or 6 litres of water with just 1g!)

2) Shea Butter (heals the skin, and gives a soft, pleasant texture to the lip balm)

3) Jojoba oil (provides pro-longed, whole day hydration to the lips)

Other than the ingredients above, another success of Deep Moist is its ergonomic packaging design (oval shaped tube) which seems to fit to the corner of the lips better than the standard roundish tube.

After using Mentholatum Deep Moist for close to 2 weeks, my lips are not as dry as before but the essence is consistency in application. There was 1 day that my lips were extremely chapped that I felt slight pain on my lower lips. I applied Mentholatum Deep Moist liberally over my chapped lips and head off to bed in my air-conditioned room. I woke up with soft, moistened lips once again the next morning!

With regards to the ergonomic oval shaped tube of lip balm, I was actually not so used to the shape as I prefer the usual roundish tube. Nonetheless, it is not difficult to apply this balm and reach all corners of my lips with the product.

Review: Biore UV Watery Essence

In bright and sunny Singapore, we cannot emphasize enough the importance of having good sun protection. My personal preference is always to opt for a sun screen that is above SPF 30 since I tend to apply my sun screen in the morning before I head out and will not be back until evening. However, the higher the SPF, the thicker and stickier the consistency of the sun screen thus it is always tricky to strike a balance between sufficient sun protection versus suitable texture. Some sunscreens leave a very ugly white cast after application which I absolutely hates but with Biore UV Watery Essence, there is no such problem.

Priced at an affordable amount of $18.90, I say Biore UV Watery Essence is a total value for money product. For readers out there who are interested in trying out this product, you will be glad to know it is easily available in selected supermarkets, pharmacies and most importantly Watsons'.
